Royal Mail - Wrap-around support on controversial logistics plans

BRIEF
SEC Newgate was appointed in October 2022 to assist Royal Mail on a Delivery Office project in Brighton. Joining the team after application submission and after the Green-led council had removed its sale of the site from the finance committee agenda, the brief was to re-craft a strategy to succeed at planning committee and finance committee.
SOLUTION
SEC Newgate undertook a full audit of project engagement strategy, making recommendations including switching to a positive messaging campaign based around the freeing up of two current Royal Mail sites for housing to effectively target decision-makers.
Through intelligence gathering we have been able to advise the client on small, targeted changes to the scheme to mitigate impact and increase the chance of approval.
We built relationships with the Leader and the Cabinet Member for Housing and New Homes and ward members for the current Royal Mail sites. Additional engagement took place with civic societies and residential associations.
We delivered a wrap-around service including political engagement and analysis and press relations support.
OUTCOME
The Patcham application was approved in 2024. The client was well prepared, and BHCC Planning Committee well-briefed.
