As Glastonbury Festival returns to Worthy Farm this weekend, we look back at just some of the most iconic and memorable moments from over 50 years of contemporary arts and music.

  1. Glastonbury Festival is born
Worthy Farm opened its gates for the first time on the 19 September 1970 to a crowd of just 1,500 people who had paid a mere £1 to attend what would become the most popular music festival in the world.

  2. Beyonce headlines the Pyramid Stage
The legendary singer took to Glastonbury’s main stage in 2011, performing an array of crowd-pleasers including Crazy in Love, Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It), and Independent Woman.

  3. The first grime artist headlines in 2019
With only one album under his belt at the time, Stormzy dominated a 2-hour headline slot at Glastonbury in a bullet-proof vest designed by Banksy with a special appearance from Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin.

  4. Arcadia arrives on the farm
The eccentric, fire breathing stage shaped like a spider made its Glastonbury debut in 2007 and has since hosted the likes of Groove Armada, Calvin Harris and Annie Mac.

  5. Alex from Glasto
UK Rapper Dave pulled a young fan from the crowd during his slot on The Other Stage in 2019 to join him in performing his track Thiago Silva, and ‘Alex from Glasto’ became a viral sensation shortly after.

  6. The Killers surprise fans in 2017
Fans squeezed into the John Peel stage to watch the band ignite the festival during their secret set with their biggest hits, including the chart-dominating track Mr Brightside. The Killers then went on to headline the festival for the second time in 2019.

  7. David Attenborough makes an appearance
A surprise appearance from Britain’s national treasure caught the attention of all festival attendees as he praised the festival for going plastic-free and promoted his show Seven Worlds One Planet to a crowd of over 100,000 people.

  8. The Foo Fighters finally headline
After having to cancel their headline slot in 2015 due to Dave Grohl breaking his leg at a show in Sweden just days before, the Foo Fighters finally made their headline debut in 2017 to a crowd of long-awaiting fans.
